Should I vote for the Taj Mahal

Should I vote for the Taj Mahal as the new wonder of the World just becuase I am an Indian? I do not think so. Even if my vote helps the Taj Mahal become one of the seven wonders and thus boost tourism in India, I do not think I should vote for Taj Mahal. I haven't seen other wonders to compare which one is better. I also don't know how other countries or people may benefit if their monument becomes one of the seven wonders.

People think that the Taj Mahal is a reflection of Shah Jahan's love for his (supposedly) beloved wife Mumtaz. It is not entirely true; rather it is far from truth.

Mumtaz died after delivering 14 children and when her body could no longer bear so many pregnancies and deliveries. It is also true that Shah Jahan had incestuous relation with his daughter after they were put in a jail by Aurangazeb.

The Taj Mahal was built by collecting taxes from both the poor and the rich, not from Shah Jahan's personal earnings. Contrast this with Aurangazeb's bibi ka maqbara. Aurangazeb built it with his own earnings, derived from writing and selling copies of Quran, and by weaving and selling hats.

The Taj Mahal is beautiful and motivates people to think of love, but its origin is hardly rooted in love and beauty.

I don't think I will vote for the Taj Mahal.

Very good point made!! If my facts are right, shah jahan actually got mumtaz killed for some personal benefit and built the Taj mahal - for being one of the wonders of the world and he had his own selfish reason to do so. Aurangzeb in fact came to know abt this fact..and once he was old enough, snatched the throne and put his father in jail.

fully agreed..having spent my college life inb the vicinity i did pay the ocassional visit...the only feeling it evoked was of sadness thinking about the sheer wastage of money and manpower..
an interesting contrast that i once read is that while Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal...America built the Harvard..
guess it sums it up

Hmm.. I have visited a couple of wonders of the world.
The personal reasons behind Taj Mahal could be different.. but it sure got its looks and is a master piece.
Other wonders of the world were also built with people's money, thats history, but the question is does it appeal to tourists now? I am sure Taj Mahal does.

Vijay ,

Reason given by u for NOT going to vote will be correct - IF THE VOTING COMITEE is lookin at the person behind the construction of monuments like TAJ MAHAL, but it is all about can we include TAJ MAHAL to the NEW WORLD WONDER - either the answer sud b based on it's beauty or the architecture of the construction....every monument is built for personal reasons. If this shows INDIA to the WORLD, then wats the POINT in NOT VOTING ? And not everyone knows all the places - BUT wen it comes to tours & travel ppl want to visit - the best places, how do u find the best places - RANKINGS similar to COLL selection reputation matters , after 50 years ppl will ask wo is GANDHI ? same way they might ask TAJ MAHAL where is it ? Reason given is absolutely out of context & its way 2 personal for taking this decision, tho' no wrong in it BUT.....IF IT IS FOR INDIA yes we sud vote!!!

@Kapil - America build Harvard 2... out of the TOP 50 destinations conducted - out of top 10, 9 places r in USA, out of TOP MBA's USA has most of the places..in each and every category they are having ,cos they got more VISIONARIES...after independence i haven't seen much of a CONSTRUCTION happening in INDIA - even the necessary stuff like - DAMS. yes harvard is good, & our own IIT is better than harvard for reasons like - BEST EDUACTION , LOW COST etc....can u pls tell me is ther any of the TOP univ in US giv education with similar fee sturcture as IIT to ALL THE of their students enrolled. Atleast support the one we have and will try to build a HARVARD here !!!

Vijay....I feel your reasoning this time is lousy ...expected better from you.
"I haven't seen other wonders to compare which one is better"..that is like I haven't worn all brands of shirts....so I will not wear a shirt :) "I also don't know how other countries or people may benefit if their monument becomes one of the seven wonders" .... as if you do everything that benefits others...."The Taj Mahal was built by collecting taxes from both the poor and the rich, not from Shah Jahan's personal earnings. Contrast this with Aurangazeb's bibi ka maqbara. Aurangazeb built it with his own earnings, derived from writing and selling copies of Quran, and by weaving and selling hats" ....and I built my house by the salary i earned..may be that is why it should be nominated to be one of the wonders of the world...

Kapil....ever heard of Nalanda...and are u not comparing apples with oranges??

Kiran...."and built the Taj mahal -for being one of the wonders of the world and he had his own selfish reason to do so".... so did shah jahan know that it will become a wonder of the world?

Comparing IIT's with Harvard is highly unfair to either. Harvard has had a much more profound effect on geopolitics and the world in general than the IIT's. IIt;s have been around for a while only and it would take them a lot of time to achive wjt Harvard has done ...Tell many how many people actually want to go and teach at IIT viz a viz Harvard.

We are straying frm the context of the post.Taj Mahal was nothing but a useless indulgence paid by the sweat and tears of the poor. Tell me wht did Taj Mahal do for the common man at that point of time.
I am sure the taxpayers money could have been provided for a much better use than this..

yes i have heard about nalanda..but i dnt seem to recall meeting any graduates frm thr...
ur just giving the lame argument tht Indians generally give whn the run out of excuses ...we have 5000 yrz of culture n blah...

Kapil, I do not want to fight...However, the context is Voting for Taj Mahal to be a wonder of the world....and if I am not wrong, as per the selection criteria, this is based on a monument being an architectural master piece and an example of human feat of engineering.

So, if you want to judge based on your criteria of whether it was not a waste of money or manpower...i am sorry dude, you are in a wrong contest.

@Kapil - U quoted a wrong example and it led to straying. Yes Harvard had a profoundness, If u really look in to Best of the product in the last century - A INDIAN name is almost there & in every field and he wud have been from IIT, students study from IIT and will go on to get a gr8 job oversea and study in Harvard, wharton then why not the profoundness will not join hands to Harvard....Alumni are contributing heavily for them and for our IIT tho' contribution comes but the proportion is very less, they had visionaries then,..but INDIA is on surge - U WILL C HARVARD here too in the future, lets work towards achieving it rather than keep lamenting abt wat IND didn't produce.... We the younger generation sud enter politics and change the Corrupted politics to uplift INDIAN bureaucracy and there by build our own NALANDA !!!
Tho' I know I'm straying out of context and using Vijay's blog to tell the thought - U WILL PROUDLY SAY ONE DAY - WE TOO HAVE TAJMAHAL 2 other than our own EDUCATION SYSTEM !!!

Your facts may be right and good.. But Taj Mahal becoming one of the 7 wonders may become the gateway for all the sealed doors to get opened, a way for people to question the actuality behind it!! It could happen that it could turn out positive in that way for the truth to unfold
