What is life?

Friendship, despite being highly rated by many, has its limitations. Friendships stop where ego begins. And where does ego begin. relative. but sooner than later.

Love (as in love between wife & husband and the ilk) is different but not too different. love fills the heart with feelings hardly possible in any other relation. couple it with sex, it is, really & metaphorically, orgasmic. but even love has a strong element of selfishness. There is, despite poetry & all, an expectation of reciprocity.

One emotion which has always stumped me is compassion. i have always found my eyes watered when i see a scene in a film where some stranger does good to someone else; uninvited. what motive could he/she have to give away. one may get cynical (like how i was about both friendship and love), and say that the person being kind has his / her selfish reasons such as appeasing his higher maslowian need/s. but when it comes to compassion and giving away, i have a strong tendency to be floored and get optimistic about life. i think it takes some unique chemical combo to be compassionate and give away.

On a similar note, if people close to us (physically) suffer, we (emotinally) suffer too. but v can never ever feel the pain our dear ones go through. the other nite, i was thinking about the pain my mother went through having a heart failure. i was with her, i empathised, i was emotionally shaken, i am happy that my (our) emotional support did help her recover fast. but i really could/can never feel the pain she went through. when it comes to physical suffering, you are all alone.

Such is life.

PS:

What is life? I am increasingly getting disturbed with this question. As much as getting impatient with myself for struggling with proper thinking over it. Btw, if I havent said before, I am a non-believer. Hence, all the trouble in finding answer/s to the questions such as "the purpose of life" and the like.

I am not claiming that there is a single answer to the question, what is life. that there is one 'moment' when i may know of the answer. that there is any possibility of an answer at all. I guess, I am more worried about a perspective on this, rather than an answer.

Vijay - u r so right about compassion. There are these moments in life that expose the triviality of a lot of things which we consider serious till that point in time. I dont know what life is, but having the above perspective throughout helps in leading it :-)

I think life is about opposites.
its about one "feeling/emotion" at one moment and the absolute opposite at some other point in time.
We all have all the "so called" good and bad potentials within us, hence the mind boggling diversity found in this world.
Life for me is about reaching a point where this mental distinction between the opposites ceases to exist. (Thats what I make out of all the literature and sayings of great folks).
Everything else is just about keeping our minds engaged.

PS: totally personal thoughts. But this is makes perfect sense to me.
