Competence Vs Preference

We love (and hate too) people who are pretty successful. We aspire to become what they are. In a b-school, most of them want to be a consultant or an i-banker. But what everyone tends to forget is that people who are successful, people who end up becoming consultants or i-bankers, have their preference aligned to their competence.

Competence is something you cannot change (even if it can be changed, such change will be marginal). Preference is something that keeps changing with context, with time and with fancy. Unfortunately, so long as preference is not aligned to competence, results achieved will never be at the best. We all know that we can manage only those that can be changed. So, managing preference is the right away to think about managing our careers & personal lives.
