Shashi Tharoor and Courage of Conviction

Shashi Tharoor's recent controversy proves that, in Indian politics, there is no room for courage of conviction. In the congress party, you are crucified if you have opinions about Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, and Indira Gandhi. Why, the entire Nehru-Gandhi family. There are only facts about them and all point to that - they could/can make no mistake; their intentions were clean; India is what it is - mind you, it is great - because of them. They are God's gift to India. They are gods themselves.

An intellectual like Shashi Tharoor is required in politics and government. But can he survive?

PS: Rahul Gandhi's efforts to bring internal democracy and openness into the party may after all be not successful. There is too much of hero-worship and sycophancy.
